HVAC Guide – How to Save Drastically on Air Conditioning Running Costs

What is the most simple tip to save you money when running your air conditioning unit? The answer is to set the air conditioning unit to the correct temperature. Below are some hints and tips that will save you money.

When running your air conditioner, ideally you should set the temperature to 22-23 degrees Celsius (74 degrees Fahrenheit). This is an ideal temperature for both heating and cooling.

During cooling, the lower you set the temperature the longer it will take the unit to cycle off. Many people think the lower they set the temperature, the quicker the home will cool. But an air conditioning unit will cool at the same speed whether it is set on 23 degrees Celsius (74 degrees Fahrenheit) or 18 degrees Celsius (65 degrees Fahrenheit).

Air conditioning units are designed to cycle off. Ideally the unit will only run about 20 minutes every hour. The outdoor unit will continue to cycle on and off which is where you get your energy savings. The unit may appear to be always on but this is just the fan running. The outdoor compressor is the part of the unit that cycles on and off. If you are not sure how long your unit is running, go out and listen to the compressor and listen for it cycling on and off.

When running your air conditioning system at night, try putting the temperature a few degrees higher on cooling mode. Your body will cool down quicker at night as you wont be moving around so you will have less to cool down.

When your air conditioning unit is on heating the same applies. The hotter you set the temperature, the longer the unit will run for and the more it will cost you in power bills. Set the lowest temperature you can that feels comfortable.

Remember, the temperature you will not be the exact temperature you feel in the room. Treat the temperature setting as a scale, and adjust accordingly. If on cooling it is still too warm, adjust the temperature down in the smallest possible increments until you are comfortable. Likewise on heating, adjust the temperature up as small as possible until comfortable.

These tips will make a drastic cost saving in your power bills. Stick to these tips and not only will you save money but you will also extend the life span of your air conditioner.
